[13:11]<@BC_Programming> I think my second hard drive may have finally failed
[13:13]<@Mulreay> :-(
[13:14]<@BC_Programming> that would be an understatement
[13:14]<@BC_Programming> doesn't help that as a result every single application I'm running that tries to access it hangs
[13:15]<@BC_Programming> Just opening explorer hangs the entire machine
[13:15]<@BC_Programming> I'll try rebooting
[13:15]<@BC_Programming> brb

[13:17] * BC_Programming is now known as BC_Programmer
[13:17]<BC_Programmer> words cannot express how pissed off I am at Windows Update
[13:17]<BC_Programmer> that stupid crap where it installs stuff when you shut down or restart
[13:18]<BC_Programmer> as if, you now, you never ever need to restart in an emergency
[13:18]<BC_Programmer> No, you always have time to leave it on and have it mess with crucial system files
[13:18]<@Mulreay> wb]
[13:18]<BC_Programmer> via laptop and mibbit client btw
[13:19]<BC_Programmer> update will probably freeze and leave me with an unbootable desktop
[13:20]<BC_Programmer> I really love how it doesn't show progress
[13:20]<BC_Programmer> that's really nice
[13:21]<BC_Programmer> Good thing I don't need to shut down from CPU overheating or something
[13:21]<BC_Programmer> "Quick shutdown" woo... got to shutdown just in time
[13:21]<BC_Programmer> "Please wait while windows install 700 updates"
[13:22]<@Mulreay> Yeah, I get those all the time.. REALLY annoying
[13:22]<BC_Programmer> then it hangs from the CPU overheating, because it's soo much better to hang in the middle of a system update than at the desktop
[13:22]<BC_Programmer> and there is no option "yes, when I choose shutdown I want to shutdown, not have to dance about fiddling with system innards when half the machine isn't working properly"
[13:23]<BC_Programmer> like when my graphics card occasionally overheats and goes wonky, I can't even try to restart windows because it will freeze and I'll be left in an unbootable state...
[13:23]<BC_Programmer> have to use the old "hold the power button" method to reboot properly
[13:24]<@Mulreay> Yeah never a nice thing to do
[13:24]<BC_Programmer> can't even do that now because it's sitting there install update 2 of 2... do I know what it is? no, of course not. Why let the user know what the update is
[13:24]<BC_Programmer> for all I know it's installing an update for Office or something
[13:24]<BC_Programmer> because that's critical "oh, you want to reboot because one of your hard drives stopped responding... sounds good, first let me install this completely unnecessary update"
[13:26]<BC_Programmer> If this doesn't go well it's ironic that the last place I would look for help would be CH
[13:26]<BC_Programmer> because you know they'll just be all "well you should use disk images"
[13:26]<@Mulreay> haha very true
[13:27]<BC_Programmer> I don't exactly find Multi-TB drives just lying around to do that
[13:27]<+camerongray> I'm busy reinstalling a laptop for someone
[13:28]<+camerongray> Typical teenager's laptop
[13:28]<@Mulreay> How do you re-install a laptop? Just plug it back in?
[13:28]<+camerongray> Full of viruses, junk and toolbars
[13:28]<+camerongray> Reinstalling Windows :P
[13:28]<BC_Programmer> also it takes almost 20 minutes for my desktop to even start booting :(
[13:28]<@Mulreay> Why so long?
[13:29]<+camerongray> I ran MBAM and removed the viruses but most applications would crash and go to the error reporting which also crashed
[13:29]<BC_Programmer> well probably not that long, maybe a full minute or two just sitting at the initial post screen before it even looks at anything
[13:29]<+camerongray> The original fault was the WiFi wasn't working
[13:29]<BC_Programmer> I have no idea why it takes so long... the entire thing is probably going to catch fire or explode one day
[13:29]<+camerongray> Ahh, no spare drives?
[13:29]<BC_Programmer> spare drives for what?
[13:30]<+camerongray> your PC
[13:30]<BC_Programmer> I have a few 160GB IDE drives
[13:30]<BC_Programmer> all my SATA (2) are in the computer
[13:30]<+camerongray> Ahh
[13:30]<BC_Programmer> and none of my spare drives happen to have enough space to store 1.5TB of information
[13:31]<BC_Programmer> Still sitting at windows update, installing this mysterious and undisclosed Update 2 of 2
[13:32]<@Mulreay> Actually on the subject of HDD's anyone know of any good Bit by Bit drive cloning software?
[13:33]<BC_Programmer> I don't
[13:33]<BC_Programmer> I have discovered there is a registry hack to disable the automatic updates on shutdown thing
[13:34]<@Mulreay> I want to clone my PS3 drive on to a larger one but Sony has some sneaky methods to detect new cloned drives and you have to format through the PS3 if you install a new one. Just wondering if a bit by bit would sneak past
[13:34]<BC_Programmer> It might
[13:34]<BC_Programmer> but I think it does something like store the Serial of the drive in it's Firmware or something equally stupid
[13:34]<@Mulreay> ahh
[13:35]<@Mulreay> Yeah that would stop it
[13:35]<@Mulreay> What is the hack?
[13:36]<+camerongray> Mulreay: I use Clonezilla but not sure if that would work for a PS3
[13:36]<+camerongray> You'd need to resize the partitions afterwards though
[13:36]<BC_Programmer> there is some kind of pairing process
[13:37]<BC_Programmer> apparently it works on newer PS3's or something
[13:38]<@Mulreay> Mine is a new slim one.. all I find online is jumbled threads answered by morons that know feck all about computers
[13:41]<@Mulreay> It's no big deal i could just back up the PS3 to another drive but as it has to be FAT32 I would probably have to by 2 drives... 1 for the PS3 and 1 to backup the data
[13:42]<@Mulreay> buy*
[13:46] * Nat (natman97@mib-D760DC52.west.biz.rr.com) has joined #glitchpc
[13:48]<BC_Programmer> PS3's internal drive uses some undocumented proprietary FileSystem, from what I understand
[13:48]<BC_Programmer> FAT32 is for externals
[13:49]<BC_Programmer> At this point I don't think the TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) of a console is really less than a PC
[13:50]<BC_Programmer> a lot of the annoyances you get with Desktop PCs you get with Consoles now- like Hard Drive problems, Updates, patches, etcetera
[13:51]<BC_Programmer> I am very tempted to force my desktop to reboot at this point
[13:52]<BC_Programmer> but I'll give it a while
[13:53]<BC_Programmer> I don't even remember which physical hard drive is which
[13:55]<BC_Programmer> I guess whoever designed it decided it would never be necessary to quickly shut down, and they could always take their sweet time installing updates
[13:55]<BC_Programmer> "My PC is on fire, I better shut it off quick to save my data"
[13:55]<BC_Programmer> *please wait while windows installs critical updates"
[13:56]<BC_Programmer> Unless one of those critical updates is a fire extinguisher it's not going to really help if the PC is on fire

[14:45]<BC_Programmer> gave up on the update and forced a reboot
[14:45]<BC_Programmer> second hard drive is detected in the BIOS and I got to the login so far, so OS isn't fuggled up at least
[14:45]<@Mulreay> wb
[14:46]<BC_Programmer> One day when I shut down and remember I'm going to remove this stupid floppy drive, too
[14:46]<@Mulreay> Wow you still have a 3.5"?
[14:46]<@Mulreay> Drive that is.. :p
[14:47]<BC_Programmer> yes I installed one of mine in it for some reason, back when I had that thinkpad
[14:47]<BC_Programmer> hmm... well I guess maybe the Operating System is completely screwed
[14:47]<BC_Programmer> Black screen with cursor last 5 min so far
[14:47]<BC_Programmer> and naturally right as I say that the desktop appears...
[14:47]<@Mulreay> Do you have a recovery CD?
[14:47]<BC_Programmer> HAHAHAHAHA
[14:47]<BC_Programmer> hahahaah
[14:48]<@Mulreay> oops this can't be good
[14:48]<BC_Programmer> recovery CD? wtf are you talking about? for what?
[14:48]<BC_Programmer> hmm
[14:48]<BC_Programmer> second hard drive SMART health is at 1% :(
[14:48]<@Mulreay> erm
[14:49]<BC_Programmer> at least I can access files on it again... will do a good ol' chkdsk
[14:49]<+camerongray> I hate trying to figure out what to charge for services :P
[14:50]<BC_Programmer> I think 1% SMART status is a bad sign :/
[14:52]<BC_Programmer> yes this is definitely trouble

[15:05]<@BC_Programming> I wonder why it thinks 1% now though
[15:05]<@BC_Programming> hmm looks like it's the temperature... I wonder if it's just an overheating issue
[15:06]<@BC_Programming> Power on time: 1115.3 Days o_o
[15:07]<@BC_Programming> hmm that's less than my System Drive though
[15:07]<@BC_Programming> I'm going to say the drive overheated... probably the cause of my HDD woes really
[15:07]<@Mulreay> 1115.3 days?
[15:07]<@BC_Programming> yeah
[15:07]<@Mulreay> wow
[15:08]<@BC_Programming> system drive is 1560 or therabouts
[15:08]<@BC_Programming> but it's allegedly fine according to SMART
[15:08]<@Mulreay> That's redonculous
[15:08]<@BC_Programming> Power on counts are around 100 each
[15:09]<@BC_Programming> seems the secondary is flagging as being bad because of read error rate and whatnot, but I think it might be because it has problems when it overheats... if I can keep the temp lower, that might prevent issues
[15:11]<@BC_Programming> Actually, I could probably put one of the HDDs where the floppy is, seems they have temp problems because they are basically a ball of heat in one spot
[15:11]<@BC_Programming> I think I'll do that now, actually- brb

[16:10]<@BC_Programming> ended up swapping the drive positions
[16:10]<@BC_Programming> couldn't put an HD where the floppy was though, which is weird because they are the same size
[16:11]<@BC_Programming> couldn't find the faceplate for the floppy either so I just sorta left a hole in it
[16:11]<@Mulreay> wb
[16:11]<@BC_Programming> ty
[16:12]<@BC_Programming> so good news is it doesn't appear to have failed yet at least
[16:12]<@Mulreay> cool
[16:14]<@BC_Programming> I'm thinking they just overheat, which causes problems. second hard drive had more because it was nestled beneath the other one, so couldn't cool very well
[16:15]<@BC_Programming> I spaced them out a bit... had to switch a few cables around to get it in the bottom spot, hopefully that extra breathing room keeps them both cooler
[16:15]<+camerongray> Ahh, my case has a fan that blows cold air from outside the case directly over the HDDs
[16:16]<@BC_Programming> mine doesn't and there is no room for the one I do have
[16:16]<@BC_Programming> I wanted to install one of the HDDs in the floppy spot, wouldn't fit, spent about a half-hour looking for brackets to put it in one of the upper 5-1/4" bays
[16:16]<@BC_Programming> then couldn't get the bloody faceplate out
[16:17]<@BC_Programming> and then realized I couldn't mount it there anyway because you need to use these rail things, and it didn't fit on the bracket properly :/
[16:18]<@BC_Programming> and I'm not about to do what I did with my 386 back in the day... no brackets so I just screwed them on one side, lol
[16:19]<@Mulreay> heh
[16:19]<@BC_Programming> maybe the hole in the case where I took the floppy drive out will help somehow
[16:21]<@Mulreay> OK need to choose my Sci-Fi episode for bed and dinner soon.. completely forgot to eat and it's 23:21 and have to be up at 8am for the shop.. last day tomot

[17:32]<+camerongray> hey Tux2
[17:33]<+camerongray> I have a question I seem to be asking everyone...
[17:33]<+camerongray> How much would you charge to backup a PC, reinstall the OS/Drivers and copy the data back?
[17:34] * Kevin (Mibbit@mib-DEA9649.dhcp.aldl.mi.charter.com) Quit (Ping timeout)
[17:42]<Tux2> $90
[17:42]<Tux2> for a basic one
[17:42]<Tux2> depends on how much data
[17:43]<Tux2> If it's running more than 80GB I'll charge $120
[17:43]<Tux2> camerongray
[17:52]<+camerongray> Ahh, thanks

[17:53]<lucifer> Lol
[17:54]<+camerongray> I'd hate to ask for more than £50
[17:55]<+camerongray> Which is mad since I would get more money if I did
[17:55]<+camerongray> I charged someone £60 to build a PC and copy files to it :P

[19:26]<+camerongray> lol - Billing for PC repairs
[19:27]<+camerongray> "Oh, I spent an hour installing software so that would be £10" "But it was all free software which they could have done themselves so I shouldn't charge"

[19:28]<lucifer> Yeah

[19:28]<+camerongray> I know :P
[19:28]<lucifer> Nice BC_Programming
[19:29]<+camerongray> But billing at more than £10 an hour makes me cry :P
[19:30]<@BC_Programming> well considering most places practically wipe and reinstall windows for everything, and still charge $200 even though they hardly ever even install drivers or other software...
[19:30]<+camerongray> Yeah, Would be fine if they were random public but I know them
[19:31]<@BC_Programming> not to mention charging for replacements that aren't necessary and then keeping the old component
[19:31]<+camerongray> But even then, I only know them because they are my granny's neighbour and have an adorable labradoodle
[19:31]<@BC_Programming> that one probably makes me the angriest... they'll charge for a new hard drive (which isn't even necessary) and don't even consider the value of the old one they plan to keep
[19:32]<+camerongray> Yeah
[19:32]<@BC_Programming> I think "it's a hard drive issue" might be the catch-all if they can't figure out what the problem is
[19:32]<+camerongray> I always offer the old one, they often let me keep it though
[19:32]<@BC_Programming> the one time something did need a new HD, I did keep it
[19:32]<@BC_Programming> but only because I gave them one of mine :P
[19:33]<@BC_Programming> think I charged 100$ for that entire operation... think it was pretty much just installing Windows+Drivers+Office and whatnot to the new drive... $100 seemed fair given the drive cost me $40 or so originally
[19:37]<+camerongray> yeah
[19:37]<+camerongray> £70 seems far too much :P
[19:37]<+camerongray> for what I did
[19:38]<@BC_Programming> I think it's not enough :P
[19:38]<+camerongray> I know it's not enough too!
[19:38]<+camerongray> But I don't want them to be like "How much?"
[19:38]<@BC_Programming> in fact you did more than a shop might have
[19:38]<@BC_Programming> a lot of them just wipe the drive
[19:38]<@BC_Programming> and go "duh what data?"
[19:38]<+camerongray> True
[19:38]<@BC_Programming> or claim "we couldn't save any of the data"
[19:39]<+camerongray> I'm even storing a clone of the original drive for 2 weeks to ensure that nothing has been mised
